made of this highly 
  dramatic cantata, especially after their entreaty not to be over-theatrical in 
  his
church compositions when appointing him! Luckily for us, he ignored them. 
  The theme is taken directly from the
Gospel. Jesus quiets a raging storm when 
  the disciples lose faith and become frightened. In Neumeister's
libretto, the 
  analogy of the fearful soul approaching death is brought out more explicitly. In 
  the
opening aria, Jesus sleeps to a gently lilting accompaniment but the texture 
  and the minor key herald the
approaching storm. The following recitative 
  expresses the fears of the disciples for their safety. Then the
storm starts 
  crashing about in the next aria! A short arioso (,i>Ye of little faith, why are 
  you so
fearful?) leads into a stunning aria, with a lovely oboe d'amore line, 
  where Jesus calms the raging waves. A
slightly quirky feature here is the use of 
  the da capo aria form, where at the nominal end of the aria the
opening bars are 
  repeated, which means that the storm, having been calmed, promptly starts again! 
  Never
mind, it sounds wonderful. A recitative leads into a familiar chorale (the 
  second verse of Jesu, meine Freude)
that is a superbly effective ending for the 
  cantata.

Thou Thy servant depart in 
  peace, according to Thy Word. The gospel reading includes the words of the Nunc 
  Dimittis, the prayer of Simeon requesting release from this world now that he 
  has seen the arrival of his
Saviour. I won't mince words: This is my favourite 
  cantata and perhaps my favourite piece of music! Please, when
I die, have this 
  sung at my funeral. Why? It is a perfect marriage of an exceptional text (alas, 
  the
author remains anonymous) to sublime music. The text paraphrases (and 
  expands) the Nunc Dimittis so that the
soul identifies itself with Simeon and 
  itself asks for release now that it has achieved fulfilment through
Christ. / 
  / The opening phrase of the oboe in the opening aria will remind you of Erbarme 
  dich from the
St. Matthew Passion. This time there is a lilting accompaniment 
  from the violins. Any half way decent
performance should have you in tears very 
  soon. After a short recitative, one of Bach's most famous arias,
Schlummert ein. 
  I'm afraid that you'll need another handkerchief. Death is seen as tranquillity: 
  Here I
must cultivate misery, but there, there I shall behold sweet peace, 
  tranquil rest. Another recitative and then a
more up-beat aria that anticipates 
  death with joy.

Concerto about 
  the opening movement of this cantata, amplified by the prominent horn parts. 
  It's not
inconceivable that we're hearing yet another piece of lost (violin?) 
  concerto here. Indeed, the instrumental
parts of this movement could quite 
  happily stand on their own. However, the alto soloist slots in quite nicely
to 
  complete a very joyful opening to this cantata which, in partnership to the 
  great BWV 82, revolves
around the Nunc Dimittis. The following aria/recitative 
  uses the first two verses of the Nunc Dimittis intoned
with one of the plainsong 
  psalm tunes. It's very striking. The tenor aria that follows might be taken as 
 
further evidence to support the idea of a lost violin concerto. Maybe not quite 
  so clear but it abounds with
attractive triplet rhythms. A final recitative and 
  a straightforward chorale setting bring the cantata to a
close.

supreme gifts was to make so much 
  out of what seems so little. Here is a good example. The cantata for solo 
  soprano, BWV 84 has the very straightforward structure of aria, recitative, 
  aria, recitative, chorale. None
of the movements has a complicated orchestration 
  or musical structure and the total duration is typically under
fifteen minutes. 
  The effect, however, is delightful. The first aria starts with an introductory 
 
ritornello on the oboe which skips along with delicate trills and the soprano is 
  soon mirroring the oboe trill
for trill. The second aria is even more playful. 
  In the meantime the text, apparently by Picander, quietly but
firmly reinforces 
  part of the message of the Gospel of the day, that we should be happy with what 
  we
have.
